She is never afraid to take on the tough topics and things that are real in today's world. This was a hard read because she gets you to so empathize with the characters that you can actually feel their emotions. Not easily moved to tears I found my sight blurred several times by tears at the intensity of the feelings that jumped off the pages. I also love the clear message of faith that shines through each story.
And finally I love the clever quick witted responses that so many of the characters have. Quips like I wish I could come up with but only think of them long after the moment has passed. So thanks again Karen for another great read! One person found this helpful. I am very impressed with the beautiful way Karen Kingsbury wrote about the varied feelings about war.
I've read many of her books and have admired her ability to tackle tough issues with tact and compassion. This two book series is probably my favorite of all her books. Though there isn't one book of hers that I would strongly recommend; this series would be the one highest on the list. As with any great book, your emotions will be all over the place, but will end up with a beautiful peace. I have never written any spoilers before but I have questions.
I have read several of Karen's other books. Why do they have to be so incredibly sad? This one is at least a ten hanky read. I have not cried through almost a whole book since one called Cloud Nine. Now there's a misleading title as is Ever After. You wouldn't know it from this book but there is a lot of joy to be found with God in your life. In these two books there is an almost 20 year separation with the two people always searching for each other. A child and parents who missed out. A death a week after they find each other.
Then the first couple do almost nothing but fight, another fall in love. This is rip your heart out stuff.
This is silly but I got so involved in the characters that I almost wanted to pray for them. Even the eventual happy ending is overshadowed by all that happened before. Shane went to college in LA so why couldn't Lauren find him? She becomes a senior reporter for Time magazine with internet accessibility but Emily finds him the first time she tries? Emily figures out that Lauren is using a different last name and it takes her days to try it? Why did she try to be a reporter when trying to reach her dad and not just saw she was looking for him?
Why did she not try directory assistance? Then there is a death a week after they all find each other? Then true love and another death? The first couple miss almost 20 years together and the next couple lose forever? No wonder the author cried when writing this stuff. I just don't have it in me to read another book like these tragedies.

I know this life isn't all roses but good grief! The only reason I can think of for young vital, life-changing people to be taken by God is a saying I've heard a lot in church. I just don't know what else to say. I've thought for days about this review and I have never written one this long. I have been a Christian for 44 years and have been almost bed-ridden for much of my adult life with migraines and other health issues.
I know life is hard but there is also much joy to be had. I may not always be happy but with God it is possible to have a deep abiding joy that is always present. I can trust God with my present and future. Maybe this was the author's point - but I'm not sure it came off that way to a nonbeliever. If you read this - keep the tissues close.

I thought the characters were well written - Kingsbury has a gift to help us see and understand the hearts of all her characters. A must read for anyone who has someone serving in the military, or who knows someone serving in the military, as well as veterans and their families; helps us discover the meaning of sacrifice, and the great love God has for us who sacrificed His Son on our behalf. Their tender relationship, founded on a mutual faith in God and nurtured by their trust and love for each other, proves to be a shining inspiration to everyone they know, especially Emily's reunited birth parents, Lauren Gibbs and Shane Galanter. Lauren and Shane still struggle to move past their opposing beliefs about war, politics, and faith. Shane believes it's possible; Lauren doesn't. So she says a painful good-bye to her long-ago love and returns to her job as a war correspondent in Afghanistan.
